KITESURFING LESSONS

What is kitesurfing and why should you take lessons?

Kitesurfing, also called kiteboarding, uses a controllable kite to pull a rider across the water on a board. It is exciting, technical and highly dependent on wind, water conditions and correct equipment handling.

Professional instruction is essential before riding independently. A structured kitesurfing course teaches kite control, safety systems, body dragging, water starts, riding in both directions and self-rescue. Our goal is to help you become a safe, confident and independent rider.

Which kitesurfing course should you choose: group or private?

A two-person lesson can be a good way to begin, especially during the first theory and kite-control stages. It works best when both riders have a similar weight and progress at a similar pace.

Private kitesurfing lessons become more effective once training moves into the water. You have your own equipment, the instructor’s full attention and more riding time. This usually means faster progress.

Independent riders can choose advanced kitesurfing coaching with video analysis. We can work on technique, transitions, jumps, new manoeuvres or different board types. Your session is filmed, reviewed afterwards and the clips are yours to keep.

We have taught kitesurfing since 2009. If you are unsure which format fits your level, contact us and we will recommend the most effective option.

KiteTherapy runs kitesurfing courses and trips in carefully selected destinations.

Where and when can you take a kitesurfing course?

We currently teach in two destinations selected for reliable wind and effective progression:

Sicily: 15 April to 30 October 2027

Lo Stagnone in Sicily offers a huge lagoon with shallow, flat water and thermal wind. These conditions suit first lessons, water starts, upwind riding and advanced coaching.

Vietnam: 1 December 2026 to 1 April 2027

My Hoa near Phan Rang has a large tidal lagoon. Beginners can use shallow water, while experienced riders can train on flat water, waves and in stronger wind.

Choose the season that suits you

We teach in Sicily during the European summer season and in Vietnam during winter. Contact us and we will match the destination, dates and course format to your level.

IKO kitesurfing courses and structured coaching

Our lessons follow a clear progression from safety and kite control to body dragging, water starts, upwind riding and independent riding. After completing the relevant level, you can receive confirmation of your IKO progression.

Lessons take place on suitable windy days. The schedule is adjusted to the forecast, water conditions, your skills and training goals. You pay for the hours actually completed on the water, and you can continue from the level reached during an earlier course.

Beginners can start with a shared lesson, then move to private kitesurfing lessons for faster progress in the water. Equipment rental is also available for independent riders.

Many riders can complete the core beginner programme over 3 to 4 windy days, although progress always depends on the rider, conditions and training format.

Kitesurfing lessons in Sicily
Professional kitesurfing training

For beginners, we recommend Sicily

For a beginner, a private kitesurfing course is usually the most efficient format. The instructor focuses fully on one rider and the student has dedicated equipment throughout the lesson.

Lo Stagnone in Sicily combines a vast lagoon, shallow flat water and reliable thermal wind. Shared lessons can work well for the first theory and kite-control stages. Once you move into the water, one-to-one coaching gives you more practice time and more precise feedback.

Who can take a kitesurfing course?

A typical starting point is around 12 years of age and 35 kg, provided the rider can follow instructions, has basic physical fitness and uses correctly fitted equipment. Individual readiness matters more than age alone, so younger riders may be accepted after an instructor’s assessment.

How long does it take to learn kitesurfing?

Progress varies with the rider, wind, water conditions and lesson format. During private coaching, many students typically reach these stages:

  • After 6 to 7 hours: practising water starts and riding the first metres.
  • After 8 to 12 hours: riding in both directions and beginning to hold ground.
  • After 13 to 20 hours: riding upwind, working on transitions, launching, landing and self-rescue.
  • After 20 to 30 hours: more consistent upwind riding, transitions and first skills such as toeside, jibes, pop and jumps.

Experience in sailing, windsurfing, wakeboarding or snowboarding can help, but it is not required.

Should I book in advance?

Booking early improves the chance of instructor availability. Send your dates, number of riders and current level through our booking form. We also accept last-minute enquiries.

How much does a kitesurfing course cost?

The price depends on the destination, number of hours, lesson format and group size. We confirm the current price before booking.

What should I include in my enquiry?

  • Sicily or Vietnam
  • Preferred travel dates
  • Number of riders
  • Current level of each rider
  • Your goal, for example first water starts, riding upwind or jumps

Send your booking enquiry and we will reply with availability and a recommended course plan.
